The word Kalamkari is made up of two terms, 'Kalam' meaning 'Pen/Brush' and 'Kari' means 'work'. Hence the word Kalamkari literally translates to Pen or brush work. Kalamkari work is one of the main traditional works of India and is represented in many art forms of the country. The exclusive characteristic for a Kalamkari shawl would definitely be the fine details and the careful mix of colours in this intricate hand drawn pen/brush work.

When a Pashmina is chosen for Kalamkari, it has to be sent to an artist called Kalamkar(a specialist of Kalamkari). Kalamkar uses materials like bamboo or other wooden pens with flat nibs called Kalams, dips them in inks which are made from vegetable derived pigments, and creates marvelous designs all over the lush fabric.

It is later hand embroidered in multicolored threads to make the motifs more prominent and beautiful.
